Contractor Certification Procedures

In order to advance its purpose of promoting a long-lasting, durable and attractive cladding selection, and encouraging vigorous competition among plastering professionals, the Stucco Manufacturers Association (SMA) sets standards for Contractor Certification. The Certification process is reference and performance-based assessment. The final decision for approval is the SMA Board of Directors.

QUALIFICATION:

To be eligible for SMA Contractor Certification, and applicant must:

  • Have been in business in the lath/plastering industry, under its current ownership and structure for at least two (2) years before submitting an application.
  • Have completed at least five (5) cement-based stucco projects under its current ownership and using its own employees.
  • Have not been declined SMA certification within the previous two (2) years.
  • Where the applicant has multiple branches or entities, certification is limited to the single branch or entity which employs lathers/plasterers and has a supervisor that has successfully passed the testing for SMA Training.

PROCESS:

STEP ONE: Verify the employer or a supervising employee has a valid SMA training card, with classification of SUPERVISOR.

STEP TWO: Complete the on-line registration.

  • List five (5) completed projects, brief description of work (with addresses) completed with its own employees; work subcontracted out will not be considered.
  • Verify licenses and contracting history
  • Verify the supervisor with SMA Training Card
  • Submit fee: Fee will be returned minus 20% procressing charge for declined applications

STEP THREE: The SMA staff will verify references and then submit the applicant’s packet to the SMA Board of Directors. The applicant will be notified of the Board’s decision. Once approved, the SMA Certified Contractor will be listed on the SMA website and may use the “SMA Certified Contractor” logo. The SMA does not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, gender, national origin.
