About the Stucco Manufacturers Association

Who We Are

The Stucco Manufacturers Association (SMA) is a not-for-profit trade association with the mission to educate and promote the use of cement-based stucco, including one-coat stucco over rigid foam. The efforts of the SMA has led cement-based stucco, per US Census data, to become the number one primary cladding on new homes for the United States. The SMA is the national voice for what are considered acceptable industry practices related to lath an plastering.

The SMA is a member organization (501c6) receiving that derives 100% of its funding from membership. Our memberships include the entire industry with manufacturers, dealers, contractors and consultants across the United States. SMA members have a vested interest to improve stucco while keeping stucco an affordable cladding to the public.

The SMA is an organizational member of ASTM and frequently asked to provide clarity on the variations lath, flashing and the application of cement plastering. The SMA provides assistance to the design and code enforcement agencies free of charge. The SMA also helps building owners that have questions about cement stucco.

History

The Stucco Manufacturers Association (SMA) was formed in the early 1950’s to improve the stucco industry. The “Weep Screed” was invented as a joint effort between the SMA and the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) in 1953. The weep screed was proposed as code amendment for stucco on framed walls by the SMA and became part of the Uniform Building Code in 1970.

In 1973, the SMA partnered with the California Association of Window Manufacturers (CAWM) to develop the first standards for penetration flashing of nail-flange windows. That joint document was later subsumed by the American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA).
